Reporting to the Supervisor – Forestry, Operations, this position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive Town forestry program with the Forestry Division of Operations and ensuring forestry related service requests are dealt with in a timely manner. This position is responsible for working with crews, other Arborists, seasonal staff and students as required. This position is also responsible for leading forestry maintenance management programs such as young tree pruning, cyclical urban tree maintenance, tree planting projects, cabling and other forestry duties as assigned by Operations Forestry Administration staff.

This is a contract position ending in December 2019, with a possibility of extension.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead various project teams in the field in implementing projects directly related to all Forestry activity, such as: tree insect and disease suppression, tree removal and felling programs, tree pruning programs, tree watering programs, tree hazard mitigation, tree stake removals, mulching, brushing, cabling, stump grinding, tree planting, and woodlands tree maintenance;
  • Undertake woodlot and street tree management activities;
  • Investigate and assess complaints, inquiries and service requests in a timely manner while having an understanding of all ongoing in-house or contracted tree contracts being implemented by the Town;
  • Review/inspect both in-house and contractor forestry work as required by the Manager and/or Supervisor;
  • Implement assigned arboriculture work, including pruning, removal and cabling according to current policies and procedures and generally accepted industry practice(s);
  • Operate specialized equipment such as: chippers, chain saws, stumper and standard tree climbing equipment where required in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Assist in winter Operations duties, including sidewalk plowing and must be available to work shifts/weekends/overtime/on call duty if needed;
  • Maintain a “master tree inventory” in the field and updating the tree inventory with all work orders as various works are completed – (software and hardware systems still under review at this time for this requirement);
  • Create Tree Risk Assessments, Site Hazard Assessments and fill out Forestry Tailboards and Traffic Control Plans for all projects, every day;
  • Provide budget recommendations to the Supervisor and/or Manager of Forestry as required;
  • Apply best forestry practices on roads, in developments and natural and naturalized areas throughout Town;
  • This position is subject to overtime shifts to deal with emergency situations (ie. tree hazard amelioration, wind storm / ice storm and other such duties);
  • Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating procedures/guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act;
  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Forestry, Arboriculture or Horticulture;
  • 3-5 years of field experience;
  • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification;
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) Certification;
  • ISA Tree Worker designation;
  • Extensive tree identification knowledge;
  • Chipper and stump grinder training and knowledge;
  • Book 7 traffic control training and knowledge;
  • “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License would be considered an asset;
  • Understanding of the majority of the common native and Carolinian tree species endemic to southern Ontario;
  • A comprehensive understanding of all ornamental and non-native, but non-invasive species that are suitable for Milton’s urban areas;
  • A comprehensive understanding of invasive species and how to implement suppression and/or eradication programs;
  • Knowledge of horticultural best cultural practices in relation to urban trees, shrubs and soils;
  • Knowledge of municipal tree standards, subdivision and site plan design and overall landscape architectural plan;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and customer service skills;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Excellent writing and problem solving abilities;
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and adapt to changing priorities;
  • Ability to work in all kinds of weather and ability to lift heavy objects such as tree branches, chain saws, trees for planting, etc.;
  • Travel to work sites and between work locations is required;
  • Qualified candidates will be required to complete a written and practical test;
  • The successful candidate must have clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required if selected for an interview. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply.


Hourly Rate: $33.98
