ISAO Communications & Website Coordinator

The ISAO is looking for an individual skilled in graphic design and web page/ecommerce as well as being able to build member relations and promote the ISAO at events and assisting in the day-to-day operations of a small not-for-profit organization.

Responsibilities will include the design and preparation for print and e-magazine formatting of the bi-monthly publication (6-times annually), Ontario Arborist; coordinating and designing the addition of key content for online such as social, web and email; and organizing e-commerce capability development and implementation. Other responsibilities will be helping in the day-to-day tasks of the ISAO Organization.


ISAO Description and Mandate

The Ontario Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture, also known as ISA Ontario (ISAO), is a component Chapter of the larger international body. ISA enjoys a rich heritage as a scientific and educational organization with a primary mission to disseminate information and knowledge in the care and preservation of trees.

The Ontario Chapter sits consistently at just over 1,000 members, while the international membership is over 22,000, divided into almost 50 chapters and associate organizations worldwide – the world’s largest such organization.

The ISAO is involved in many major projects and initiatives throughout the province relating to best industry practices, arborist education and training, and public education and awareness. Our membership is diverse, ranging from commercial, municipal and utilities arborists; through educators and students and on to landscape contractors, landscape architects and grounds managers. This diversity contributes to the strength of ISAO. Central to all of this stands the tree, the focal point of our membership.

Compensation: This is a contract position with no benefits outside of the contract. An estimated 35-40 hours per week are required.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Works with: Various ISAO volunteers and committees

Job Responsibilities:

Include but are not limited to:

●  Coordinating internal communications via web page, e-mail and social media

● Layout, design and printing of the ISAO magazine, Ontario Arborist, published 6 times per year, including producing print ready In-Design files and an e-magazine version for posting on the web page

● Soliciting and working with external writers and photographers to obtain copy and images for magazine

● Liaising with the Board and Committees to ensure official ISAO content is included in magazine

● Soliciting and obtaining advertisements for magazine from industry; collaborating with industry to produce copy for advertisements

● Coordinating the ISAO’s social media presence

● Web page management including maintaining and updating user-friendly web pages, including drafting and editing content, e-commerce (products, membership, event and educational seminars and conference)

● Working with external IT consultants, the ISAO Executive Director and Board members to expand ISAO presence through the design and implementation of new web-based applications that will improve service and positively impact member’s, associates’ and clients’ experience

● Receiving media requests and directing them to ISAO officials for handing

● Maintaining and building positive, productive relationships with ISAO members, associates, volunteers, industry partners, government agencies, allied associations and industries which includes attending and assisting in ISAO events

● Other duties as required, working with the ISAO Board, volunteers and committees in the above and at events and educational seminars (for example, at ISA Ontario conferences, tree climbing competitions and workshops);

● Receiving and handling inquires by phone, e-mail and social media’ and redirecting these as necessary


Your Resume must include and demonstrate:

● Education and experience in graphic design

● Education and experience in coordinating, editing and writing web page content

● Experience in project management

● A portfolio that demonstrates excellent writing skills in two styles: Communication for the broad public; and communication to industry professionals

● A portfolio that demonstrates expertise in modern magazine layout and design

● Experience in the not-for-profit sector is an asset

● Experience working with paid digital services like Google AdWords, Google Tag Manager and Facebook Business Manager, is an asset

You must also have (and will be tested and/or interviewed on):

● Excellent project management skills

● Ability to work independently and to manage a heavy and diverse workload with tight deadlines

● Ability to work well in a team environment, maintaining positive relationships with a volunteer Board and volunteer committees

● Ability to effectively deal with complaints and conflict

● Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills

● A high level of knowledge of web page and content management (including WordPress, HTML, and CSS); and good familiarity with e-commerce applications and online security

● Adept with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign) and all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, Instagram, Google Analytics, Hoot Suite, MailChimp, Survey Monkey, etc.

● Proficient command of English

● Ability to work in various locations and to travel as required in servicing an Ontario-wide membership with educational and other events held across the province

● Ability to work out of a personal home office as well as at the ISAO office located in Milton

● Use of own vehicle (mileage reimbursed) and a valid Ontario Class G licence is required
