Short-term Project Support-Arboriculture

Guelph based

The Company Aboud & Associates is a Guelph based consulting firm that unites the disciplines of Arboriculture, Ecology and Landscape Architecture. The firm has enjoyed success and growth over more than 20 years by continually providing excellent results and service and fostering a cooperative corporate culture. Business continues to be good, and we have some ongoing projects that would benefit from short-term assistance.

The Gig
Our primary need of the intern(s) is a large project assessing health of recently planted trees along urban streets, though other tasks are likely to be assigned from time to time. To be a competitive candidate for the position, you’ll be comfortable with field work, be efficient and meticulous with data collection and understand the basic principles of tree establishment and growth. What might give you an advantage is experience with a GIS and common tree measuring and health assessment protocols. What may set you apart is a demonstrated ability to conceive, plan and execute a project.
Our corporate approach and culture best supports people who are self-motivated and well-rounded. Collaborating with the professionals in house is a big part of this position. You will need confidence to make informed decisions pretty quickly, but your coworkers will provide regular project support. You will also work with external professionals, and you will speak directly with clients, contractors and residents. In short, you will need to be able to effectively communicate tree related issues with non-arborist types using clear and defensible reasoning in public and in reports.

The Fine Print
If you can accomplish the above, you’ve got what it takes! Realistically though, you will need a basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and you will be comfortable with electronic data collection (GPS/tablet). We are an agile company that welcomes new skill sets to expand our horizons, abilities and efficiencies. If you can help out with one of the other disciplines, let us know.
The field functions of the job, which include tagging trees from time to time, occasionally occur in physically demanding environments like roadsides, construction sites, swamps, and ravines. You will often be travelling to these environments by yourself, so a valid driver’s license is required. We will supply the car.
